Apr.9 UK/Greece: Buckingham Palace announces the Death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, today Apr. 9, 2021, aged 99 years old @ Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK – stating: “It is with deep sorrow that HM The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. HRH passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.” He was 2 months away from celebrating his 100th Birthday in June, and was the longest serving consort in British history, having been married to Q.Elizabeth II for over 73 years. He was born as Prince Philippos of Greece + Denmark on June 10, 1921 @ Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece, as the only son & youngest + 5th child of Prince Andrew of Greece + Denmark (younger son of King George I of Greece & Queen Olga of Greece) & Princess Alice of Battenberg (daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg & a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom), who married in 1903. He was also the grandson of Louis VI, Grand Duke of Hesse + by Rhine & Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. At the time of his birth the Greek throne belonged to his uncle, King Constantine I of Greece, who had to abdicate in 1922 following a revolution. He was of Danish, Russian & German heritage. His 4 elder sisters were: Princess Margarita of Greece + Denmark (m. Apr. 20, 1931 to Prince Gottfried of Hohenlohe-Langenburg); Princess Theodora of Greece + Denmark (m. Aug. 17, 1931 to Prince Berthold of Baden); Princess Cecilie of Greece + Denmark (m. Feb.2, 1931 to Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse + by Rhine); & Princess Sophie of Greece + Denmark [m. 1st on Dec. 15, 1930 to Prince Christoph of Hesse (died 1943); m. 2nd on Apr. 23, 1946 to Prince George William of Hanover]. He was born 7th in line to the Greek throne, while his father was away fighting on the front of the Greco-Turkish War, which Greece lost in Autumn 1922. He was baptized in the Greek Orthodox rite @ St. George’s Church, the Old Fortress, Corfu, Greece. His godparents were: Queen Olga of Greece & the Corfu City Council. He & his family fled Greece into exile aboard a British warship when he was 18 months old carried in a makeshift cot fashioned from an orange box. The family then lived in genteel poverty @ Saint-Cloud, Paris, France, in a house given to them by his aunt-in-law, Princess Marie Bonaparte. His education began in France @ The Elms (an American school in Paris), but his parents’ marriage began to crumble. Afterward he had an unsettled childhood, almost an orphan – his father settled in Monte Carlo, Monaco, amassed gambling debts & moved in with a mistress; his mother (who was deaf since birth) founded an order of nuns & then became depressed + admitted to an asylum + institutionalized numerous times. In 1928 he was sent to England, UK, & placed under the guardianship of his grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Milford Haven (Princess Victoria of Hesse + by Rhine, later Princess Louis of Battenberg, then later Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven) & he attended Cheam School @ Headley, Hampshire, England, UK. He was also looked after by his uncle, George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven. After 1931 the Saint-Cloud house in France was closed down & there was no longer a home base for the family/siblings at all. In 1933 he was sent to a school in Schloss Salem, Germany, & was educated by Kurt Hahn, but was brought home in 1935 to the UK after the rise of Nazism. He attended Gordonstoun school (founded by German Jewish refugee Kurt Hahn) @ Morayshire, Scotland, UK. In 1939 he left Gordonstoun & enrolled as a cadet @ Dartmouth Naval College (The Royal Naval College), Dartmouth, Devon, England, UK, [where in 1939 he became reacquainted with the then Princess Elizabeth during a visit of King George VI & Queen Elizabeth with their 2 daughters] for a term, then returned to Greece to be with his mother. His cousin, King George II of Greece, asked him to return to the UK to continue to prepare for service with the Royal Navy as the spectre of war loomed. He graduated in 1940 at the top of his class. He joined/enlisted in the British Royal Navy & was a searchlight control officer on the battleship HMS Valiant during WWII & was mentioned in dispatches in 1941 for his role in the Battle of Matapan against the Italian fleet. He was promoted to First Lieutenant at the age of 21 on July 16, 1942 & helped save HMS Wallace from a night bomber attack in 1943. His wartime service also saw him present at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay in 1945. After his time in the Pacific, he was at the Petty Officers’ School @ Wiltshire, England, UK. He was 3rd cousins with the Queen & they met several times before he became a serious suitor in 1946, years after she fell in love with him at age 13. Upon his secret engagement to the then Princess Elizabeth in the Summer of 1946 where he asked The King for her hand in marriage, he renounced his Greek title & became a British citizen (Feb. 28, 1947), and took his mother’s anglicized name, Mountbatten. The official public announcement of their engagement took place on July 10, 1947 (as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten). On Nov. 19, 1947 via Letters Patent his future father-in-law, King George VI, granted him the title, style + attribute of ‘HRH’ & awarded him the Order of the Garter. In Letters Patent dated Nov. 20, 1947 the King bestowed upon him Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth & Baron Greenwich. He married Princess Elizabeth (now Q.Elizabeth II) on Nov. 20, 1947 @ Westminster Abbey, London, England, UK. During their early marriage they lived in Malta. They had 4 children: Pr.Charles Pr of Wales (b.1948) [m.1st Lady Diana Spencer (later Diana, Princess of Wales, after divorce. Died 1997); m.2nd Camilla (Shand) Parker Bowles (now Camilla Dss of Cornwall)]; Pss Anne Pss Royal (b.1950) [m.1st Mark Phillips (divorced); m.2nd Vice Adm.Sir Timothy Laurence]; Pr.Andrew Dk of York (b.1960) [m. Sarah Ferguson (divorced, now Sarah Dss of York)]; & Pr.Edward Earl of Wessex (b.1964) [m. Sophie Rhys-Jones (now Sophie Ctss of Wessex)]. After their wedding, he took charge of renovating Clarence House, London, & worked at his naval career overseas. He was with the Queen on Feb. 6, 1952 while on a stopover in Kenya (on a royal tour, on their way to Australia) when news came that King George VI had died. He later took on the patronage of over 800 organizations throughout his time as consort, with special attention paid to his creation of The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme & his presidency of the international World Wildlife Fund. The Queen created him a Prince of the United Kingdom on Feb. 22, 1957. He announced his retirement from royal engagements in May 2017, and on Aug. 2, 2017 undertook his last official public appearance, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952. After his official retirement he spent most of his time at Wood Farm, Sandringham, Norfolk, England. He had hip surgery in April 2018 & attended the wedding of Pr.Harry Dk of Sussex 1 month later. He was involved in a car crash in Jan. 2019 near the Sandringham estate, & later voluntarily surrendered his driving license. He spent 4 nights at King Edward VII Hospital in London before Christmas 2019 for observation & treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. During the COVID-19 pandemic he had been living with Q.Elizabeth II in their “bubble” @ Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London again on Feb. 16, 2021, after feeling unwell + an infection & then underwent a procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He had returned to Windsor Castle on Mar.16 after spending a month in hospital. He had keen interests/passion for the outdoors + the environment, physical pursuits, modernization, religion, wildlife conservation, industry, science, nature, young people, polo, four-in-hand carriage driving, hunting, shooting, sailing, painting, flying & was a qualified pilot. He was a polyglot & spoke English, German + French fluently, & could understand a certain amount of Greek. Besides his wife & children, he is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Pr.William of Wales Dk of Cambridge (m. Catherine Dss of Cambridge); Pr.Harry of Wales Dk of Sussex (m. Meghan Dss of Sussex); Peter Philipps [m. Autumn (Kelly) Phillips, separated 2020); Zara Phillips Tindall (m. Michael Tindall); Pss Beatrice of York (m. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi); Pss Eugenie of York (b. Jack Brooksbank); Ldy Louise Mountbatten-Windsor; & James Mountbatten-Windsor Vscnt Severn. He is additionally by 10 great-grandchildren: Pr.George of Cambridge, Pss Charlotte of Cambridge, Pr.Louis of Cambridge, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, Mia Tindall, Lena Tindall, Lucas Tindall & August Brooksbank, with 1 more on-the-way due early this summer. He is also survived by nieces & nephews: Pr.Georg Andreas of Hohenlohe-Langenburg; Pr.Maximilian of Baden; Pr.Ludwig of Baden; Pr.Karl of Hesse; Pr.Rainer of Hesse; Pss Clarissa of Hesse; Pr.Georg of Hanover & Pss Friederike of Hanover; as well as many other niece/nephew-in-law, & great-nieces/nephews He will Lie in Rest @ Windsor Castle, & the Royal Ceremonial Funeral will be held in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, Windsor, on Apr. 17, & he will be interred in the Royal Family Vault beneath the chapel.
