Apr.23 Luxembourg: The Grand Ducal Court announces that HRH Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg has passed away, at the age of 98 years old, surrounded by his family on Apr.23, 2019 @ 12:25am, in a statement issued by his son, GD Henri of Luxembourg. He was hospitalized last week with pneumonia. Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg was born in Jan. 1921 as the eldest child of Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg & Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma. He was educated in Luxembourg, the UK, & Canada, before joining the British Army’s Irish Guards in Nov. 1942 after the Grand Ducal Family fled their country after the invasion by Nazi Germany in 1940. He graduated from the Royal Military College Sandhurst, England, UK, as a Lieutenant & was part of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France, & participated in the liberation of Brussels, Belgium, and Luxembourg. He married Princess Josephine-Charlotte of Belgium in 1953, and they had 5 children: Pss Marie-Astrid of Luxembourg Archdss of Austria, GD Henri of Luxembourg, Pr.Jean of Luxembourg, Pss Margaretha of Luxembourg Pss of Liechtenstein & Pr.Guillaume of Luxembourg. He had 22 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren. He took the throne of Luxembourg in Nov. 1964 upon his mother’s abdication and reigned for 36 years until his own abdication in Oct. 2000. His state funeral will take place on May 4, 2019.
